Lactation Care

What to Expect During Your Visit

Let me take you behind the scenes and show you what a typical visit looks like. Every visit is different because every situation is different, but here's the flow I usually follow:

I'll listen first

  • Your story, your challenges, your goals

  • What's working and what isn’t

Then we'll work together on what you need

  • Weigh your baby

  • Watch a feeding session

  • Check your baby's latch and positioning

  • Look at your baby's mouth and tongue

  • Assess your breasts if you have pain or supply concerns

  • Measure for correct flange size

  • Provide pumping guidance

  • Bottle and pacifier information

  • Troubleshoot schedules or pumping routines

  • Plan for returning to work

  • Address supply management

I'll give you information so you understand how breastfeeding works - because when you're informed, you can make empowered choices for your family.

Some visits are hands-on, others are more about strategy - it all depends on what you need that day.

At the end of the visit

  • You'll have a clear plan that works for you and your family

  • We have discussed recommendations

  • You'll have my contact info for questions between visits

  • If you'd like a follow-up visit, we'll schedule it before I leave

My approach comes from 15 years as a midwife and NICU nurse. I give you practical, evidencebased support that fits your real life - not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Lactation Support

How many visits are necessary?

Most families benefit from support at key moments in their breastfeeding journey:

  • 1-2 visits during pregnancy - Prepare for breastfeeding before baby arrives

  • 2-3 visits in the early weeks - Learn how to latch and establish breastfeeding

  • 1 visit before returning to work - Set up pumping and create a plan that works

  • 1 visit before starting solid foods - Navigate this transition smoothly

Need support with a specific challenge? Whether you're dealing with tongue tie, slow weight gain, clogged ducts, mastitis, nipple pain, or transitioning between breast and bottle, I can help. Contact me to discuss how many visits your situation typically needs.

How to Check Your Benefits Call your insurance company and ask:

  • "Are lactation consultant visits covered as preventive care?"

  • "What is my coverage for IBCLC services?"

  • "Do I need a referral or prior authorization?"

Even if reimbursement isn't guaranteed, many families are pleasantly surprised by what their insurance covers. I'll provide all the documentation you need to submit your claim.
